LYDIA, Uncertain mint. Circa 650-550 BC. Lot of two early Electrum. EL Hekte (2.33 gm). Forepart of a lion left / Double incuse punches, one with stellate pattern, the other with a bird left (eagle?). Spier 9 (same dies); Rosen 368 (same dies) // EL 1/24 Stater (0.59 gm). Head of a boar right/ Incuse punch with stellate pattern (same die as previous coin). Spier 6=Rosen 282 (same dies). Two specimens of the hekte are known to Spier, only one of the 1/24 stater. Both VF. Two (2) coins in lot. ($2000)

The Hekte is ex Münzen und Medaillen Washington (7 December 1997), lot 118.

The reverse dies link these two coins to a series of inscribed Lydian tritai and hektai with the partial legend, ...late... (see Spier pg.332) with letters of recognizably Lydian form. Accordingly, the entire series, including the uninscribed coins in this lot, can be confidently assigned to Lydia.
