THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid-late 1st century BC. AR Stater (24mm, 6.13 g, 12h). Petraios and Ptolemaios, magistrates. Head of Zeus right, wearing oak wreath / ΘEΣΣA ΛΩN, Athena Itonia right; ΠET-PAIO[V] above; ΠTOΛEMAIOΣ in exergue. BCD Thessaly II 887.2 var. (arrangement of first magistrate’s name). Good VF, some light cleaning marks.

Petraios, strategos of the League, son of Themistogenes of Gyrton, was an ardent supporter of Julius Caesar (Caes., BC III, 35), and was executed by Brutus in 44 BC (Cic., Phil. 13. 33).
