326, Lot: 497. Estimate $150.
Sold for $95. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Clodius Albinus. As Caesar, AD 193-195. AR Denarius (18mm, 3.14 g, 12h). Rome mint. Struck under Septimius Severus, AD 194-195. Bare head right / Roma seated left on shield, holding Victory and scepter. RIC IV 11a var. (Roma holding palladium and scepter); RSC 61 var. (same). VF, lightly toned.

From the Demetrios Armounta Collection.

This variety is not particularly rare at all, despite not being noted in either RIC nor RSC. It appears frequently on the market, although the Victory is nearly always misdescribed as a palladium.
