THESSALY, Oitaioi. Circa 360-344 BC. AR Hemidrachm (17mm, 2.70 g, 6h). Herakleia Trachinia mint. Lion’s head left, with spear in its jaws / OITAΩИ (retrograde from top), nude Herakles standing facing, holding club transversely across chest. Valassiadis 1; BCD Thessaly II 487 (same obv. die); BCD Thessaly I 1211; Weber 2879 (same obv. die). VF, toned.

From the BCD Collection.

A note from BCD from the Triton sale: Valassiadis initially defines 371 BC and 280 BC as the outer limits for the minting of the finely styled coins of the Oitaians. He then suggests that the earliest issues should date just before the middle of the 4th century BC and not earlier. Hoard information confirms this last dating and also agrees with the sporadic nature of their minting.
