THESSALY, Meliboeia. Mid-late 4th century BC. Æ Trichalkon (17mm, 8.32 g, 3h). Wreathed head of nymph right, wearing earring / [MEΛI]–BOEΩN, grape bunch on stalk hanging from vine with two leaves. Weber 2874 = Helly, Quelques 15 = Rogers 391, fig. 205 = Warren, Two, pl. I, 8 var. (shorter ethnic); BCD Thessaly II 445 var. (shorter ethnic arranged above and below grape bunch); BCD Thessaly I –. Near VF, green patina. Very rare.

From the BCD Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 81 (20 May 2009), lot 413.

In the various publications, the ethnic on the Weber specimen, struck from different dies than the current coin, is given as MEΛI or MEΛIBOE. The right hand side of the ethnic on that coin is illegible, however, so the reverse die may have carried the complete ethnic as the current piece.
