THESSALY, Gyrton. Early-mid 4th century BC. Æ Dichalkon (16mm, 4.17 g, 5h). Bare head of the hero Gyrton right in front of head and neck of bridled horse right; NI above / ΓYPTΩNI[ΩN], head of the nymph Gyrtone left, wearing earring; kerykeion behind. Rogers 228 var./corr. (no NI [for 228, fig. 102] or NI below horse’s head [for 228, fig. 103, although not noted], no kerykeion, Os for Ωs); BCD Thessaly II 78 var. (no NI and kerykeion, Os for Ωs) and 79 var. (NI below horse’s head, no kerykeion, Os for Ωs); BCD Thessaly I 1052 var. (no NI and kerykeion); CNG 90, lot 8 (same dies). VF, greenish–brown patina.

From the BCD Collection.

The note for BCD Thessaly II 79 claims the “NI” stands for the artist responsible for the dies, but the styles of that and the current coin are so incompatible that this seems very unlikely. The letters may instead stand for a prominent citizen sponsoring part of this sizeable series.
