THESSALY, Larissa. Circa 420-400 BC. AR Drachm (17mm, 6.23 g, 9h). Thessalos left, nude but for petasos and chlamys, holding a band around head of bull leaping left / Horse walking left within shallow incuse circle. Lorber,
Thessalian 56 (same obv. die); BCD Thessaly II 370.2 (same dies). VF, toned, light marks. Rare.
From the BCD sale: “At the time Herrmann wrote his article, he thought that the coin of this type was unique; he knew just one specimen, in Berlin. The interest of this coin lies in that its inscription clearly refers to the actual coin itself and not to the issuing authority: ΛAPIΣAIA (ΔPAXMH) instead of ΛAPIΣAIΩN; ‘Larisseian (drachm)’ instead of ‘of the Larisseians’.”
