EPEIROS, Ambrakia. Circa 456-426 BC. AR Stater (20mm, 8.37 g, 7h). Pegasos flying left; A to right, serpent coiled around tortoise below / Helmeted head of Athena left, helmet surmounted by bull butting left; A to upper left; all within incuse square. Ravel, Colts 12 var. (A–/P7); Pegasi 4 var. (same rev. die; Pegasos with curled wing); SNG Copenhagen –; BMC 17 var. (same rev. die; same). VF, toned, graffiti in fields, die shift on obverse. Unpublished early variety with straight winged Pegasos.

This coin represents the earliest appearance of a straight-winged Pegasos on this coinage at Ambrakia. Previously, the first known instance was obverse die A14, paired with reverse die R12--Ravel 22.
