CILICIA, Aegeae. Julia Mamaea. Augusta, AD 222-235. Æ (27mm, 14.66 g, 1h). Dated CY 277 (AD 230/1). Draped bust right, wearing stephane / Dikaiosyne standing left, holding scales. SNG France –; SNG Levante 1777 (this coin). VF, dark green patina, surfaces a bit rough. Rare.

From the Collection of Kelly Krizan, MD. Ex Eduardo Levante Collection.

This issue must have been struck on the occasion of Severus Alexander’s visit to the city in AD 231, at the time when Aegeae was granted a neocorate and the emperor, to judge from rare coin inscriptions, assumed the priesthood of Asclepius.

From the Levante catalog: “Note the concrete meaning of Dikaiosyne (= the privileges of the year).”
