Sold for $120. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

BOEOTIA, Haliartos(?). Circa 190-170 BC. AR Drachm (15mm, 2.54 g, 2h). Pseudo-Rhodian type. Diokles, magistrate. Head of Helios facing slightly right / Rose, buds to left and right; ΔIOKΛHΣ above. Ashton, “Pseudo-Rhodian Drachms from Central Greece,” NC 155, 1 var. (buds only to left, unlisted dies). Near VF, toned, some deposits. Rare.

While the attribution to Haliartos is not certain, Ashton makes a strong argument in its favor on the basis of find spots in central Greece and the presence an archaic aspirated eta to the right of the rose on some issues of this rare magistrate. For further discussion, see Ashton, “More Pseudo-Rhodian Drachms from Central Greece: Haliartos (again), Chalkis, and Euboia uncertain(?),” NC 160 (2000).
