The Recapture of Rome

271, Lot: 560. Estimate $300.
Sold for $700. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

temp. Justinian I. 527-565. AR 1/3 Siliqua (13mm, 0.90 g, 6h). Constantinople mint. Third series, 537(?). Helmeted, draped and cuirassed bust of Roma right / Large R. Bendall, Anonymous Type 9, pl. XII, 20-21; Vagi 3040. Near EF, toned, traces of deposits. Rare.

Bendall suggests that this issue was struck at a later date than his Type 8 (see previous lot), perhaps to commemorate the recapture of Rome from the Ostrogoths in December 536.
