Thessalian League. Lot of 6 coins.

Triton XV, Lot: 909. Estimate $150.
Sold for $400. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Lot of 6 coins.

(909.1) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. Æ Dichalkon or Obol (21mm, 8.00 g, 12h). Nikokrates and Eubiotos, magistrates. Laureate head of Apollo right; kithara to left / ΘEΣΣA-[ΛΩN], Artemis Ennodia running right, holding torch in each hand; NIKOKPATH[Σ] to left, EYBIOT[OY] to right. Burrer p. 62; Rogers 56, fig. 9, corr. (kithara, not quiver, and EYBIOTOY not noted); see also Nomos 4, 1392 corr. (kithara not noted). Good Fine, green patina.

(909.2) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. Æ Chalkous or Hemiobol (15mm, 3.93 g, 12h). Eubiotos and Philoxenos, magistrates. Helmeted head of Athena right; EYBI above, [OTOY below] / [ΘEΣΣAΛΩN], horse right, preparing to lie down; ΦIΛOΞENI in exergue. Burrer p. 62; Rogers 57, fig. 10, corr. (spelling of names). Near VF, brown surfaces.

An interesting detail of this coin’s reverse is the patterned cloth (or perhaps leather) cover clearly showing on the horse’s back. It has a die break diagonally across it but this does not prevent us from observing that it covers practically the entire back of the animal. One wonders though how could this horse roll and scratch its back on the turf with this cover on it.

(909.3) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. Æ Chalkous or Hemiobol (15mm, 7.54 g, 12h). Eubiotos and Philoxenos, magistrates. Helmeted head of Athena right; [EYBI above], OTOY below / ΘEΣΣAΛΩN, horse right, preparing to lie down; [Φ]IΛO[ΞENI] in exergue. Burrer p. 62; Rogers 57, fig. 10, corr. (spelling of names). Good Fine, rough green patina.

This coin has been included in this lot to complement the previous coin, as this issue is typically struck on flans that are too small to accommodate the full legends on the dies.

(909.4) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. Æ Chalkous or Hemiobol (15mm, 5.03 g, 1h). Eubiotos and Philoxenos, magistrates. Helmeted head of Athena right; [EYBI-OTOY above and below]; countermark ΣEB in oval incuse / [ΘEΣΣAΛΩN], horse standing right, preparing to lie down; [ΦIΛOΞENI in exergue]. For coin: Burrer p. 62; Rogers 57, fig. 10, corr. (spelling of names); countermark not found in the consulted references. Near Fine, countermark is VF, green patina.

(909.5) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. Æ Chalkous or Hemiobol (18mm, 6.19 g, 12h). Python, magistrate. Helmeted head of Athena right; ΠYΘΩ-NOΣ above and to left / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Demeter standing facing, holding two grain ears in each hand. Burrer p. 62; Rogers 60, fig. 13. Near VF, dark olive and tan surfaces.

The obverse of this coin was engraved by the same artist who produced the obverse die for the rare silver drachms of the League (see lot 835, above). Furthermore, it seems as if this Python is the same magistrate whose staters (see lot 848, above) were dated in Franke 1959 and Helly 1966 to between 49 and 40 BC.

(909.6) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. Æ Chalkous or Hemiobol (15mm, 4.27 g, 12h). Python, magistrate. Helmeted head of Athena right; ΠYΘΩNOΣ above / ΘEΣΣA/Λ[ΩN], Demeter standing facing, holding two grain ears in each hand. Burrer p. 62; Rogers 60, fig. 13 var. (orientation of name). Fine, green patina.

This coin is included here to show that the issues of Python are divided into two groups, as far as obverse engraving style is concerned.
