IONIA, Uncertain. Circa 600-550 BC. EL Hekte – Sixth Stater (9mm, 2.33 g). Milesian standard. Figural type. Head of bull right / Quadripartite incuse square. R. Jameson, “Trouvaille de Vourla,” RN 1911, 6-26 (same die; some with same punch); SNG Kayhan -; SNG von Aulock 7799 (same die); Rosen 266 (same die and punch). Near EF, toned. Rare.

Ex Triton XI (8 January 2008), lot 250.

The Rosen catalog notes that the entry for the Vourla hoard in IGCH designates Samos as the mint of these coins, but J.P. Barron disagrees. Von Aulock placed the coin at an uncertain mint in Ionia, while Rosen was more general, at an uncertain mint in Asia Minor.
