SELEUKID KINGS of SYRIA. Seleukos I Nikator. 312-281 BC. AV Stater (18mm, 8.56 g, 9h). In the name of Alexander III of Macedon. Babylon I mint. Struck circa 311-300 BC. Helmeted head of Athena right / Nike standing left, holding wreath and stylis; H in left field, ü below left wing. SC 81.6-7 var. (position of controls, serpent on helmet); Price 3707 var. (same); SNG Saroglos 158; HGC 9, 3a. Good VF. Very rare variety, only the Saroglos example published.


The H in the left field was engraved in the die over the previous control, MI (SC 81.3). The obverse die on this example was also used on issues with MI in the left field (cf. CNG 64, lot 364).
