Sold for $900. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

SELEUKID KINGS of SYRIA. Seleukos I Nikator. 312-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (29mm, 16.85 g, 10h). Antigoneia on the Orontes or Seleukeia in Pieria mint. Struck in the name of Alexander III of Macedon, circa 306/0-300/281 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Nikephoros seated left; monogram in left field. Price 3191; SC 27; HGC 9, -. VF, toned. Fine style head of Zeus.

Around 306/0 BC, the Zeus Nikephoros type began to replace the Aëtophoros version. By the time this change occurred, most of the mints making the change had already replaced Alexander’s name with that of Seleukos. The present coin represents one of the very rare occasions where the Nikephoros type appears on a coin still retaining Alexander’s name (see SC p. 22).
