ITALY, Salerno. Anfuso. Princeps of Capua, 1135-1144. Æ Follaro (14mm, 0.83 g, 4h). Capua mint. Figure advancing right, holding sword and shield; O/Λ/N to left / Pseudo-Kufic legend; cross below. CNI XVIII 1-3; Travaini, Monetazione type 203; MEC 14, 188. Fine, rough brown surfaces.

The second son of Ruggero II, Anfuso was appointed princeps of Capua in 1135 to replace the rebellious princeps there, Roberto II. Because of Anfuso’s youthful inexperience, Ruggero appointed his checellor, Guarino, to act as the young man’s administrator. On the death of Sergio VII, Duke of Napoli, in 1137, Anfuso succeded him, and in 1139, the Pope, Innocent II, recognized Anfuso’s rule over both Capua and Napoli. Beginning in 1140 and continuing until his death in 1144, Anfuso, along with his brother, Ruggero III, Duke of Apulia, invaded two territories to the north: Abruzzo and Lazio, where Anfuso died.
