Julius Caesar. 42 BC. AR Denarius (19mm, 3.87 g, 7h). Rome mint. L. Livineius Regulus, moneyer. Laureate head of Caesar right; laurel branch behind, caduceus before / Bull charging right. Crawford 494/24; CRI 115; Sydenham 1106; RSC 27. VF, lightly toned, area of roughness on reverse. Well centered.

The moneyer L. Livineius Regelus was likely the son of the praetor of the same name who served under Caesar in the African War. Crawford has suggested that the reverse design might refer to an incident that occurred during the Thapsus campaign, related by Suetonius (Divus Julius, 59): “Religious scruples never deterred him [Caesar] for a moment. At the formal sacrifice before he launched his attack on Scipio and King Juba, the victim [a bull] escaped; but he paid no heed to this most unlucky sign and marched off at once.”
