PAMPHYLIA, Side. Circa 205-100 BC. AR Tetradrachm (29mm, 16.58 g, 11h). Head of Athena right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet; c/m: AΠA (=Apameia) and bow in bow case / Nike advancing left, holding wreath; pomegranate and A to left, [K] behind. SNG France 660; SNG von Aulock 4780. Good Fine, toned.

From the D. Alighieri Collection.

The AΠA counterstamp was applied in Apameia. Other bow and bow-case counterstamps on Alexander-type tetradrachms and Side tetradrachms, with different legends, have been attributed to Pergamum, Ephesus, Adramyttium, Tralles, Laodicea, and Sardes. Price has linked these counterstamps to the introduction of the cistophoric coinage circa 180 BC. The application of these counterstamps permitted the circulation of Attic weight coins in the years following the reform.
