Theodosius I. AD 379-395. AV Solidus (4.46 g, 7h). Constantinople mint, 4th officina. Struck circa AD 388. D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right / CONCORDI-A AVGGG, Constantinopolis seated facing, head right, holding scepter in right hand and in left, a shield inscribed VOT/V/MVL/X in four lines, right foot on prow left; Δ//CONOB. RIC IX 70a.3; Depeyrot 39/1 var. (lion-heads on throne) and 47/4 var. (rosette-diadem). EF, lustrous, spots of light encrustation.

This coin appears to be a transitional piece, retaining the pearl-diadem of Depeyrot’s earlier type 39 (AD 383-388), while adopting the non-lion headed throne of his later type 47 (AD 388-392).
