Diademed head of Ptolemy I right, wearing aegis around neck / Eagle standing left on thunderbolt; date to left, ΠA to right. Svoronos 1866; SNG Copenhagen 390. VF, light scratches. Ptolemy XII, the father of the last Ptolemaic ruler Cleopatra VII, was largely a puppet of the Romans. This coin dates from Ptolemy’s first reign, before he was deposed in 58 BC. He returned to power in 55 BC with Roman support.
