GOETZ MEDALS, First World War. 1918. Æ Medal (58mm, 53.39 g, 11h). The German petition for peace. Karl Goetz, designer. FRISS ODER STIRB, two extended bound hands, presenting crown and personification of Victory to eagle seated on branch; snake entwined around branch; K-G in exergue / WELT RICHTER, Woodrow Wilson seated, flanked by three figures to each side, one of whom crowns him with laurel wreath, holding a scroll reading 14./ OKTOBR/ 1918; bird seated at termination of scroll. Kienast 212. VF, black patina.


In October 1918 the German government, facing inevitable defeat, requested an armistice with the United States based on Woodrow Wilson’s ‘Fourteen Points’ outlined earlier that year.
