BRUTTIUM, Kroton. Circa 480-430 BC. AR Nomos (19mm, 7.96 g). Tripod, legs terminating in lion's feet; to left, heron standing right / Incuse tripod. SNG ANS 264; HN Italy 2102. VF.

The premier symbol of the city of Kroton was the tripod of Delphi. Kroton’s traditional foundation dates from 710 BC, by Achaean settlers under the guidance of Myscellos, acting on instructions delivered by the oracle at Delphi. The city itself was named after a mythological local ruler who had received Herakles with great hospitality, only to be accidentally killed by the conflicted hero. Herakles, in expiation, buried Kroton with great honors and foretold a great city would grow up at the site of his tomb.
