IONIA, Uncertain. Circa 650-600 BC. EL Trite (12mm, 4.65 g). Lydo-Milesian standard. Plain surface with irregular contours / Incuse rectangle. SHRT p. 328 (this coin); otherwise unpublished in the standard references. Good Fine. Extremely rare plain type with single rectangular punch.
From the Daniel Koppersmith Collection. Ex SHRT Collection (Baldwin’s 80, 8 May 2013), lot 2064, purchased from B.A. Seaby Ltd., 18 September 1967.
The obverse of this issue bears some resemblance to some of the standard Lydo-Milesian “plain” trites, all of those issues consistently have a double square incuse on the reverse, which are placed side-by-side. The only early electrum with a rectanular-punch trite are those with a globular surface with cluster of pellets obverse (cf. SNG von Aulock 7761), but the rectangular punch of those are internally bisected by a prominent line. Here the rectangular punch has internal contours, but it clearly is a single, open field within the incuse, which is quite unusual.
