Constans II Pogonatus. 641-668. AV Solidus (19.5mm, 4.44 g, 6h). Constantinople mint, 7th officina. Dated IY 6 (647/8). Crowned and draped bust facing, wearing short beard, holding globus cruciger / Cross potent set on three steps; ς to right; retrograde Z//CONOB. DOC 11 var. (officina); MIB 14; SB 947. Well struck and lustrous. EF. Pleasing youthful portrait.

From the Style Collection.

During his long reign of 27 years, Constans II grew a luxuriant beard that nearly reached his knees. Later generations would refer to him as “pogonatus,” or “the bearded.” In an odd twist of fate, in more recent centuries the appellation somehow became detached from Constans and was instead implied to his son, Constantine IV, who was quite modestly bearded in comparison to his father. In any case, this solidus, struck in the 7th year of the reign, shows Constans with a more modest facial growth.
