LESBOS, Mytilene. Julia Procula. Circa AD 139-161. Æ (26mm, 10.01 g, 7h). Apollonius, strategos. [IOY ΠPOKΛAN HPΩIΔA], draped bust of Julia Procula right, hair coiled on top of head / [EΠI ΣTPA AΠOΛΛONIOY MYTI] (or similar), Aphrodite standing facing, head left, holding apple and long scepter. RPC IV Online –; BMC –; Bürchner, ZfN 9 –; Forrer, RBN 57 –. Unpublished. Brassy surfaces, porosity. Fine. Very rare and unpublished.

Although the obverse legend and city ethnic are virtually illegible on this coin, the portrait of Julia Procula is unmistakable, making the attribution to this city certain. This coin depicting Julia Procula is one of a series honoring noteworthy citizens. Based on the similarity of Procula’s hairstyle with that of Faustina Sr., Wroth (Numismatic Review, May 1894, pp. 226-227) dated the coin to the period of the later Antonines. All coins of Procula were issued by the strategos Apollonius.
