Steatite scarab with Syrian diety Sutekh. Lower Egypt. Hyskos Period. 1650-1550 BC. (17 mm) Scarab with central bidirectional piercing for suspension. On back: Plain back with large head and clypeus. Legs defined. On face: The Syrian deity Sutekh faces left arms spread surrounded by flashes of lightning. Fine, minor deposits. Rare.

Sold for the Benefit of the American Numismatic Society; purchased by the consignor from Joel Malter.

Sutekh often is associated in later Egyptian mythos as an avatar of Seth. During the Hyksos, the influence of the Hittite God Teshub, a weather god, influences the interpretation of the deity.
