PHOENICIA, Tyre. Elagabalus. AD 218-222. Æ (27mm, 11.49 g, 12h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / Poseidon(?) standing facing, head left, wearing chlamys, foot on prow, holding trident and aphlaston; to left, murex shell. Rouvier 2382 (Aeneas); RPC VI Online 8633; BMC 411 (Kadmos). Brown patina, earthen highlights. Near VF. Rare.

The reverse figure has been variously described as Aeneas (Rouvier), Kadmos (BMC), and now Poseidon (RPC). This reverse pose of Cadmus standing on a galley, holding spear, is common on Tyrian provincials but this type is different. Cadmus is typically depicted nude, except on one rare coin, this coin has the figure wearing a chlamys. And on one exceptional specimen, CNG EA 315, lot 254, the trident and aphlaston are clear.

Closing Date and Time: 30 November 2022 at 11:37:00 ET.

All winning bids are subject to an 20% buyer’s fee.
