ILLYRIA, Apollonia. Marcus Aurelius. AD 161-180. Æ (32mm, 31.61 g, 7h). Laureate and draped bust right / Male figure running right, holding torch(?) in raised right hand, round shield on arm, spear in left hand. Robert, Carie S corr. (Caria); RPC IV.1 844; BMC 22 corr. (same). Brown patina with earthen deposits. Near VF. Very rare.

Robert and BMC note that the figure is holding an “uncertain object” in addition to the shield and spear, RPC does not mention anything in his right hand. This specimen clearly shows a torch which does not aid in identifying the man, but could represent the founder of the city of Apollonia, Glax, a Corinthian tyrant. But as his name does not appear on any of the extant specimens, this is only a theory.
