EGYPT, Alexandria. Hadrian. AD 117-138. Æ Drachm (33mm, 19.27 g, 1h). Dated RY 2 (AD 117/8). Laureate bust right, slight drapery on left shoulder / Hadrian, holding branch and eagle-tipped scepter, driving quadriga of elephants right; L B (date) above. Köln 776; Dattari (Savio) 7597; K&G 32.50-51 var. (obv. legend); RPC III 5101; Emmett 961.2. Red-brown patina with earthen deposits. Fine. Rare.

Hadrian’s coinage at Alexandria started in year two of his reign. He introduced no new types of his own, simply imitating those of his predecessor, Trajan. In fact, many of his early portraits look more like Trajan than himself. All year two coins of Hadrian are rare.
