This medal commemorates the “Great White Fleet” a popular nickname for the group of United States Navy battleships that completed a journey around the world from December 16, 1907 to February 22, 1909. The voyage was ordered by President Theodore Roosevelt to show the flag to many friendly nations as well as to deter conflict with Japan which had strained relations with the US at the time. 14,000 sailors took part in the journey, where they stopped at twenty ports of call across six continents. The fleet also assisted in recovery operations in the aftermath of the Messina Earthquake in Sicily before returning across the Atlantic to Hampton Roads for a review by President Roosevelt.
