LYDIA, Maeonia. Nero. AD 54-68. Æ (18.5mm, 4.47 g, 12h). Ti. Cl. Menekrates, strategos. Struck circa AD 65. Laureate head right / Veiled goddess standing right, holding scepter over shoulder. Kurth 78; RPC I 3011; SNG Copenhagen 231; SNG von Aulock 3016. Green-brown patina, light roughness. VF.

The goddess on the reverse has been described as Boule (Imhoof-Blumer), Hestia (Kurth and BMC), and Demeter (Waddington). Unfortunately, none of the three make a regular appearance on the early coinage of Maeonia to sway the evidence to favor one over the others. Demeter becomes slightly more regular under the Antonines.

Closing Date and Time: 1 June 2022 at 12:10:40 ET.

All winning bids are subject to an 18% buyer’s fee.
