CILICIA, Tarsus. Valerian I. AD 253-260. Æ (32mm, 16.35 g, 11h). Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from the front / Perseus standing left, holding cult statue of Apollo Lykeios in right hand and harpa, Medusa head, and chlamys in left. SNG BN 1809; SNG Levante –. Brown surfaces with lighter deposits, areas of weak strike, some roughness. Near VF. Rare.

Both this coin and the previous were struck with the same reverse die but for different emperors, most likely in the same year. This Valerian reverse shows signs of increased use, as would be expected, and possible reengraving at the mint to strengthen some features to extend the life of the die. Recutting dies was rare, it was far more likely for the die to break before its useful life was up than to have it recut.

Closing Date and Time: 4 May 2022 at 12:11:00 ET.
