STUART. Charles I. 1625-1649. AR Crown (44mm, 30.08 g, 11h). Group IV, type 4. Tower (London) mint; im: eye/eye (over star). Struck under Parliament, 1645. Charles on horseback left, holding reins and sword / Coat-of-arms. Cooper, Silver dies XXII/XXVIII*; Brooker 270/271 (same obv./rev. dies); North 2198; SCBC 2761. Deep glossy steel toning. Good VF. Extremely rare.

From the Eton Collection. Ex M. Talent (Stack’s, 24 April 2008), lot 76; F.R. Cooper (Glendining’s, 8 November 1978), lot 91; Archdeacon Ellison Collection (purchased by Spink, 1965); Seaby Coin & Medal Bulletin 447 (August 1955), no. 8715.

Struck from a reverse die issued for Group III, with the star mint mark, then repurposed for this Group IV issue, with the eye mint mark added over the star. Though re-engraved mint marks are not uncommon in the Tower crown series, they usually are found with the die altered from one with the immediately preceding mint marks, unlike on this specimen. As noted in the Cooper catalogue, ‘Only one other of cross-type from these dies known, in the British Museum.’
