EASTERN EUROPE, Imitations of Thasos and Macedon First Meris. Late 2nd-1st century BC. AR Tetradrachm (31mm, 16.05 g). Mint in the lower Danube region. Stylized head of Dionysos right, wearing ivy wreath, head at the end of serpent’s body; highly degraded form / Stylized club, zig-zag line, four annulets with pellets around; legend and form highly degraded. OTA Class –; cf. Lukanc 1888-9; Flesche 769 (same obv. die); Lanz –; CCCBM I –; KMW –. Lightly toned, several small pits, edge roughness. Good VF. Extremely rare, another unusual variety.

This unusual imitation combines two locally circulating types; the obverse of a Thasos tetradrachm and reverse of a Macedonian First Meris type. Dionysos’ head on a serpent’s body is an enigma, totally unknown in this series.
