KINGS of MACEDON. Demetrios I Poliorketes. 306-283 BC. AR Tetradrachm (28mm, 17.12 g, 12h). Chalkis mint. Struck circa 290-287 BC. Diademed and horned head right / Poseidon Pelagaios standing left, foot on rock, holding trident; Δ to outer left. Newell – (unlisted issue, but obv. die CLVII); HGC 3, 1014f; Seleukos I Hoard 293 (this coin, illustrated). Light die rust on obverse. Near EF. Extremely rare, one of only two known, both from the same hoard, the other is the sole example in CoinArchives.

From the W. Hansen Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 72 (14 June 2006), lot 495. Ex 2005 Unknown Findspot (“Seleucus I”) Hoard (CH 10.265).

Although this variety is not recorded by Newell, the obverse die link confirms the attribution to this period at Chalkis.
