THRACO-MACEDONIAN REGION, Uncertain. 5th century BC. AR Obol(?) (8.5mm, 1.04 g). Gorgoneion / Quadripartite incuse square. Unpublished in the standard references, but cf. HPM pl. IX, 29–30 for staters with similar obverse style. Toned, granular surfaces. VF. Rare.

From the Jim Gilman Collection. Ex Davis FPL 55 (Spring 2009), no. 18.

A few examples of this issue have appeared on the market over the past 20 years, but all have been misattributed to Neapolis in Macedon. Although that mint did issue obols of this general type, the obverse style across all denominations there had a highly consistent style, which is significantly different from that found on the present issue. The gorgoneion/incuse type was relatively common in the fifth century, known from disparate locations across the northern Mediterranean, such as Massalia in Gaul, Athens in Greece, and Parion in Mysia. However, as at Neapolis, the style, or elements thereof, were highly consistent at these mints, and the present coin does not appear to fit among the series at these cities. Nonetheless, characteristics of the coin seem to best fit a location in the Thraco-Macedonian region, but an attribution to elsewhere is still possible.
