Julia Domna. Augusta, AD 193-217. AR Denarius (18mm, 2.58 g, 1h). Rome mint. Struck under Caracalla, AD 211-215. Draped bust right / Vesta standing left, holding palladium and scepter. RIC IV 390 (Caracalla); RSC 230. lightly toned. Near EF. With a great portrait.

From the Style Collection.

The helmet-like coiffeur Julia Domna adopts in her later years is most probably an elaborate wig. A tiny curl of her actual hair is visible against her cheek. This portrait type faithfully recreates the marble effigy of her widely circulated throughout the empire, down to the little side curl.
