Caracalla. AD 198-217. AR Denarius (20mm, 3.42 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck AD 206-209. ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, laureate head right / SOSPI TA TORI, IOVI in exergue, Jupiter Sospitatori, wearing polos, standing facing, right hand lowered, holding vertical scepter in left, in tetrastyle shrine, with flat roof indicated by three horizontal lines. RIC IV 156; RSC 108; BMCRE 507. Attractive iridescent toning, edge flaw. Near EF. Rare.

This rare reverse type, struck by both Septimius Severus and Caracalla, marks the only appearances of Jupiter Sospitator (”rescuer”) on Roman coinage.
