1915-S. Panama Pacific Exposition. Round 50 Dollar. In PCGS encapsulation, graded MS 64. (7451.64/38080870). Truly a lovely coin with incredibly clean surfaces that seem to merit a much higher grade than the holder indicates. A gorgeous example of the lowest-mintage commemorative ever minted.

Ex Stack’s (29 March 1973), lot 1016 (part of); H. C. McKown Auction (23 December 1936); Dr. J. A. Williams Collection, offered in The Numismatist, January 1931.

Both Fifty Dollar Gold Pieces were designed by Robert Aitken. They feature a bust of Minerva or Athena left, wearing a crested and laureate Corinthian helmet and mail. The date is displayed in Roman numerals upon a shield. On the reverse, an owl is perched left on the branch of a ponderosa pine, several large pine cones are visible. Although 1,500 of each type were authorized and minted, many did not sell at the then lofty price of $100 each (approximately $2,600 today). Only 483 examples of the Round Fifty Dollar Gold Pieces were distributed–the lowest remaining mintage of any U.S. Commemorative Coin ever issued.

Important Note:
The coins and the original copper frame will be offered individually, after which the coins and the frame will be offered as a complete set with an opening bid of one bid over the aggregate hammer prices of the individual lots. If a bid is placed on the full set, the coins and frame will be sold as a complete set, and the bids on the individual lots will be canceled. If there are no bids for the complete set, the hammer prices on the individual lots will be honored.
