LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉE, triangle, surmounted by Phrygian cap, in wreaht; in exergue, L’AN IER DE LA/ REPUB FRAN / PAR LE MOYEN DE LA VIROLLE, 1792/ PIÈCE D’ESSAI/ BREZIN. Mazzard 379. On this essai, Brézin claims to invent the “virolle brisée,” or segmented collar, for striking coins. Mazzard notes that this was actually developed in the 17th century.
