Anonymous issues. 1st-3rd centuries AD. PB Tessera (13mm, 1.47 g). Horse grazing right / L I P V arranged around central pellet. Unpublished in the standard references. Fine.

An interesting piece cast from misaligned and seemingly mismatched molds: the obverse diameter is only 9 mm, while the reverse is 10. This specimen provides further evidence that many of the cast lead tokens from Rome were made from molds combining a stock design with the issuer’s name or initials. For discussion, see Dalzell, “Personal, Public and Mercantile Themes on Unpublished Lead Tokens,” in Tokens, Value and Identity: Exploring Monetiform Objects in Antiquity and the Middle Ages (2021), p. 81.

Closing Date and Time: 6 October 2021 at 11:37:20 ET.

All winning bids are subject to an 18% buyer’s fee.
