SELEUKID EMPIRE. Demetrios II Nikator. First reign, 146-138 BC. AR Drachm (17mm, 4.41 g, 12h). ‘ΔH mint’ in Syria or Phoenicia. Dated SE 174 (139/8 BC). Diademed head right / Cornucopia; ΔH monogram and ΔOP (date) below. SC 1936 var. (no ΘEOY in legend); HGC 9, 1936 var. (same). Toned, struck with worn obverse die, die break on reverse. VF. Very rare.

This drachm is part of a small series from a yet unidentified mint in Syria or Phoenicia. The coins are related by fabric and the ΔH monogram, and are dated to the regnal years 171, 173, and 174 of Demetrios. In the introduction for this series, SC states that "in the final year of its operation, the ΔH mint dropped the epithet Theos (God) from the legend." However, the more recent appearance of a handful of drachms like the present example show that for the initial part of the year 174 issue, the epithet was retained.

Closing Date and Time: 6 October 2021 at 10:42:00 ET.
