U-DEUTSCHLAND PAUL KÖNIG KAPITÄN, bust left wearing peaked cap; flag behind / ZUR FRINNERUNG AN DIE ANKUNFT DES ERSTEN HANDELS U-BOOTES in banner around, the Deuthscland at sea; above, dove bearing olive branch and banner reading IN BALTIMORE/ 9 JULI 1916. All on bronze medal set in cast iron Maltese cross with 9 JULI/ 1916 on both sides. Good VF.

The Deutschland was one of only two cargo submarines used by the Norddeutscher Lloyd shipping company, and successfully ran the blockade to the United States. The Allies protested these ships, but neutral America ignored their pleas. The Deustchland was later repurposed into a combat vessel.
