GERMANY, Lübeck (Freie und Hansestadt). nomine Maximilian II. Holy Roman Emperor, 1564-1576. AR Taler (40mm, 29.07 g, 9h). Dated 1568. Half-length bust of St. John facing, holding Gospels; to right, agnus dei right, head left, with cruciform staff and banner; coat-of-arms below / Crowned double-headed eagle facing, with globus cruciger on breast. Davenport 9409. Toned, minor flan flaw. Good VF.

By 1568, states of northen Europe had been at locked in combat with each other for five years, with the kingdom of Denmark-Norway, allied with the German city-state of Lübeck, arrayed against the Kingdom of Sweden. The belligerents met in Roskilde to negotiate a peace treaty. Though the attendees to the conference agreed to the terms and concessions, Sweden’s John III refused. The war dragged on for two more years, becoming known as the Northern Seven Years’ War.
