UNCERTAIN WESTERN EUROPE. 1st-3rd century AD. PB Tessera (12mm, 1.65 g). Sistrum / GVA. Unpublished in the standard references. Some edge erosion. VF.
This unusual specimen is stylistically related to the large series of tesserae from the city of Rome and its environs. But a closer examination reveals that this piece is struck, rather than cast, as most Roman examples are. The presence of the three letters on the reverse – likely indicating the issuer’s tria nomina – is a convention common in both Rome and Lugdunum, where tesserae are usually found struck, suggesting an attribution to somewhere in Western Europe.
