Maximianus. First reign, AD 286-305. AR Argenteus (18.5mm, 3.03 g, 6h). Rome mint. 1st emission, circa AD 294. Laureate head right / VIRTVS MILITVM, The four tetrarchs sacrificing over tripod before city enclosure with six turrets. RIC VI 27b; Jeločnik 57a, pl. VIII, 5 (this coin, illustrated); RSC 622e. Colorful iridescent toning, areas of slightly flat strike. Near EF.

From the San Vicente Collection. Ex 1953 Sisak, Croatia Hoard.

On 6 May 1953, while digging ditches for sewers in Socialističkog Saveza Street at Sisak in Croatia, workers discovered silver vessels 1.75 meters below the surface of the ground. The site of the find is near the railway station, a few meters before the level-crossing just beside the right-hand edge of the road leading toward Zagreb. The big pitcher, which is depicted in The Sisak Hoard of Argentei of the Early Tetrarchy (Ljubljana, 1961), pl. XIV, happened to get damaged during the excavation works and silver coins poured out of it. Unfortunately, the astonished workers immediately plundered the treasure as is often the case on such occasions–and they all soon disappeared taking the coins and vessels with them. Only through the intervention of the police was it possible to recover the vessels and, in all, 421 coins which were then handed over to the Municipal Museum of Sisak. The rest had disappeared.
