KINGS of MAURETANIA. Juba II. 25 BC-AD 24. AR Denarius (17mm, 2.57 g, 1h). Caesarea mint. Dated RY 43 (AD 18/9). REX IVBA, head right, wearing lion skin headdress, club over shoulder / Distyle temple with lateral peribolus, blundered inscription on entablature, pediment decorated with rosette, inverted crescent at apex; RXXXXIII (date) in exergue. Spoerri-Butcher 512 (dies 43/a – this coin, illustrated); Mazard 152; MAA 175; Müller, Afrique 45; De Luynes 3993 (same dies). Deeply toned, traces of find patina, light scratches under tone on obverse. Good VF. Extremely rare, one of only three noted by Spoerri-Butcher (the other two in public collections [Paris and Vienna]), none in CoinArchives.

Juba II proved himself one of Rome’s most loyal client kings, and in AD 11 Augustus honored him with marriage to Kleopatra Selene, the daughter of Kleopatra VII and Mark Antony. The resulting son, Ptolemy, succeeded Juba II in AD 24, and was the last of the Ptolemaic line.
