From the Andrew McCabe Collection, purchased from Baldwin’s.

One of the finest portraits on a coin in the severe late Republican style. For portraits on late Republican coinage, the standard references are Lahusen, Die Bildnismünzen der römischen Republik; J.M.C. Toynbee, Roman Portrait Busts; Vollenweider, Die Portraetgemmen der römischen Republik; and Alföldi, Redeunt Saturnia Regna. All are profusely illustrated with late Republican coins despite their slightly diversionary titles. But, undoubtedly, my favorite book on portrait coins predates all these by several hundred years: Giovanangelo Canini, Iconografia, published in 1660 with the most astoundingly realistic representations of coin portraits of the Hellenistic and Roman Republican eras.
