It is well known that Professor T.V. Buttrey spent many decades studying the coinage of Crepusius RRC 361, due to its matching reverse die numbers up to CCLXXXXVI with varying obverse symbols, allowing a comprehensive assessment of die usage and mint management. Less well known is his determination that the obverse bust on RRC 361 represents Jupiter Anxur rather than Apollo, thus agreeing with Admiral Smyth, who proposed this in 1856.

The reverse of this denarius of Caius Vibius Pansa also shows Jupiter Anxur, written as such on the coin. The figure of Jupiter is shown leaning forward on this coin type. On a visit to Terracina a number of years ago, where the Temple of Jupiter Anxur is based, Professor Buttrey was shown an unidentified lower part of a monumental male statue and realized with some excitement that the torso was leaning forward – thus identifying the statue as that of Jupiter Anxur, based on the coin, and suggesting the coin type as being a direct copy of that statue. This is a story Ted delighted in telling me, as one of many in-progress projects he was pursuing in the last decade. Every project he pursued about the ancient world delighted him! [Andrew McCabe]
