C. Curiatius f. Trigeminus. 135 BC. Æ Quadrans (17.5mm, 4.28 g, 6h). Rome mint. Head of Hercules right, wearing lion’s skin; ••• (mark of value) behind / Prow of galley right; Victory standing right on deck, holding wreath; C•C(VR)•F above, ••• (mark of value) before. Crawford 240/4a; Sydenham 460b; Type as RBW 991. Attractive dark green patina with some minor deposits and porosity. Good VF.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection. Ex A.K. Collection (Triton XII, 6 January 2009), lot 463 (part of).

For the C.CVR.F bronze series, Michael Crawford in RRC presents (a) varieties with Victory on deck, and (b) varieties without Victory. Roberto Russo pointed out to me that bronzes without Victory on deck are very likely to be imitative and should not have been included in RRC – their crude style and light weight makes this clear. This quadrans has a very nice figure of Victory presenting a wreath, on a prow of complex design consistent with the official coinage of the 130s BC. [Andrew McCabe]
